Letter: What’s going on with the Utah Democratic Party? Reading The Tribune, one wouldn’t know. Why is that?

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) President Joe Biden takes a selfie with Oscar Mata from the Utah Democratic Party, at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023.

As one of few liberal leaning news outlets in Utah, it is my opinion that your responsibility should include presenting readers with the happenings of the Utah Democratic Party.

Many, if not most, of your readers are also left leaning, if not card-carrying Democrats, and likely interested in what the Utah Democratic Party is up to. However, outside of directly going to their website (https://utahdemocrats.org), liberal Utahns are deprived of knowing the party wanting to represent them. Democratic officials aren’t interviewed, Democratic events aren’t covered, and they get very little attention.

We know what the Republican Party is up to. Being on full display with their several supermajorities in Utah and its localities, they’re hard to miss. However, lacking coverage of the Democratic Party creates the perception that they constantly have their heads in the sand.

The Utah Democratic Party is open about current events, every month they release a statement on their website’s news section. Though few would know this because local liberal leaning news outlets (that’s a mouth-full) don’t report on their activities.

As of writing this letter, the last post on the Utah Democrats’ website was on Dec. 19, announcing the launch of their 2024 “Organize Utah” campaign, which certainly sounds newsworthy. Oddly the only mention of it in my local liberal leaning newspaper so far, is in this letter to the editor.
