Letter: Cox’s actions speak louder than his words

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Gov. Spencer Cox makes a a comment during a news conference behind a new homeless shelter in West Valley City, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.

Gov. Spencer Cox’s statement to the National Guard upon the installation of a new adjunct general following the retirement of the previously abusive adjunct general: “I want you to know that it is a duty I take incredibly seriously,” Cox said. “It is often overwhelming. I think about you. I pray for you. I worry for you and your families. I care deeply about you, and I am so grateful for your sacrifice to our state and to our country.”

Does this man, and his minions (Utah Legislature, attorney general) not understand that words mean absolutely nothing! It’s one’s actions that matter. Ignoring the former adjutant general’s behavior for two years leaves Cox’s words moot.

“Disagree Better” — another of Cox’s phrases. It means nothing if your actions belie that your disagreement doesn’t lead to better results for the majority — abortion restriction, LGBTQ rights, watered down support for public education, lack of gun control, excessive growth that threatens well-being, a dying Great Salt Lake with few solutions that truly matter.

Government in the United States is intended “for the people, by the people, for the highest good of all.” Our state and the authoritarians trying to take over the national government have given up this democratic principle. Now it’s government for the wealthy and those in leadership, only.

Gov. Cox seems like a good man. His actions, though, speak louder than words.
