Letter: Recent GOP debate showed Nikki Haley as a viable candidate for president

(Seth Wenig | AP file photo) President Donald Trump speaks with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley before a meeting during the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters, Sept. 18, 2017.

The 2020 election demonstrated that integrity, intelligence, and truth are not important to many. Facts are ignored by those who believe propaganda spread by extremists and conspiracy theorists, driven by racism and bigotry. Extremist rhetoric is working to tear down the laws that protect us and give us all a voice. They discredit laws to avoid consequences of bad behavior.

The legislative branch is jeopardized by making it difficult to work effectively. Our judicial system is being devalued while voices to provoke violence are rising.

History shows the struggles our nation has faced, involving great sacrifice, loss, and pain. We need qualified leaders of good character to overcome our challenges today and to stop further division tearing us apart.

The last Republican debate revealed the character and qualifications of candidates. Nikki Haley stood out with the qualifications needed. While I do not agree with all her views, I respect what she says.

In a choice between Haley and Joe Biden, I would choose Haley. Biden has many of the same strengths, but it is time for him to pass the baton.

Haley exhibits good character, a plethora of knowledge and experience, and it appears she will work with both parties to find solutions to represent more Americans. If it becomes a choice between Biden and Trump, we need Biden, as Trump would create further damage. Trump is an authoritarian, which threatens democracy.

Vote to keep our democracy.
