In The Tribune’s recent front-page article on the 43-foot golden spike, Doug Foxley, the Golden Spike Foundation’s chairman, said that what the site needed was “the ultimate billboard.” Fortunately, he later said that what it got instead was “an amazing art object.”
Thank goodness. In 1965 the Highway Beautification Act placed billboards in the same category as junkyards. Billboards are simply junkyards on poles. Golden Spike Park will now have a real piece of art!
