Letter: Intermountain Health has indeed dropped “care” from its mission

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A news conference in Salt Lake City on Wednesday Feb. 20, 2019 where Intermountain Healthcare announced a reduction of 3.8 million opioid pills prescribed in 2018.

I worked in various roles/sites in Intermountain Healthcare for 22 years, from staff registered nurse to corporate clinical program leadership. I was proud to work for a unique nonprofit that truly put patients first and did an outstanding job providing excellent, efficient and effective care.

I’m not sure what happened since I retired in 2011, but the focus/culture has changed. My husband has waited almost a year for an intervention to a common diagnosis. We have experienced incredible delays and gaps between departments/providers. The patient falls in an abyss, and the frustration is mind-boggling. Not only did IHC change its name, it truly lost “care” as its mission.
