Regarding the recent Tribune article, “Commercial dog walkers violate rules:” I have sold my home and moved twice to escape owners who allow their dogs to bark constantly and roam throughout the neighborhood. Now I live where I am able to walk along Bonneville Boulevard, the road above City Creek Canyon.
Recently on the east side in a large parking lot, a woman let seven dogs out of her car, all without a leash. I reminded her the road was an area requiring leashes for dogs, but she didn’t seem to care, until I started calling animal control, and then she took the dogs on a steep downhill trail.
Another day walking along the Boulevard, I met a man walking a large dog without leash which proceeded to playfully jump on me, and had my entire left hand in its mouth. I reminded the man of the “leash only” sign he had just passed, but he didn’t seem to care.
Solution? “Leash only” signs at east and west entrances to Bonneville Boulevard, and patrolling by animal control. A stiff fine might be a good deterrent to keep dogs on leash so all may have a more safe and pleasurable walk. Dog owners: If you want to exercise and socialize your dog “off leash” there are 14 “dog parks” in Salt Lake City.
