Letter: Does Utah’s GOP sound like a party willing to listen to moderation in all things?

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah delegates show their support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as he delivers the keynote address at the Utah Republican Party 2023 Organizing Convention at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

It was interesting that The Salt Lake Tribune’s recent editorial, whose board historically has leaned left to counter the right-leaning newspaper in this town, found it advisable to tell Utah Republicans how to moderate themselves.

Since many Republicans tend to snarl at The Tribune when/if they read it, I thought it amusing to think they would take this advice as if it were as simple as wiping a spot off their red neckties.

Unfortunately, since the good old days of the Birch Society, many Utahs still think “good” people are Republicans. One has to have a loud voice and two good ears in Utah to get that party’s attention.

Unfortunately, when Utah’s far right Republicans gerrymandered this state, the possibility of getting an opposite voice disappeared. Does this sound like a party willing to listen to moderation in all things?

Right now those with a conscience should be thinking seriously about getting rid of the angry guy who looks like he’s advertising a shiny hair care product. Then focus on the big issues which involve our world, not just a city, a state, or even a country … the entire world. Global warming is real and people are dying proving it. Fascism and suppression of dissent are real, and people are … Some people still sit around waiting for the “last days”... Do we recall that the last days will be human caused?

The Utah right needs to repeal our gerrymandered boundaries so those of us on the left will have a voice. The only advice Republicans will ever hear will have to come from the left, but unfortunately, only their right ear is currently attached.
