Letter: Millions of Americans have given up on America and are ready to anoint a king

(Bridget Bennett | The New York Times) Flags fly at Donald Trump's fly-in rally in Minden, Nevada, on Oct. 8, 2022.

Republican support for Trump is close to universal across the board. Whether today’s Republicans watch Fox News or don’t watch Fox News, whether they’re rich or poor, evangelicals or nonevangelicals, rural people or city dwellers, a majority of today’s Republicans plain old are the party of Donald the Jumping for Joy J. Trump (see The New York Times / Siena Poll July 23 through 27).

I have never felt more afraid for America and the world than I do right now. You see, it’s not any one person who is what I dread. That one person gets all the attention and that only works to his advantage. He feeds on any kind of attention, whether positive or negative. He’s important as a catalyst, but he’s not only what I dread.

What do I dread?

I dread millions of Americans who’ve given up on America and who are ready to dump the family jewels, our legal institutions, our democratic institutions, our sciences, and give over to a king.

What is America but an experiment on doing without a king? And by golly, we’ve managed passably well without a king for 247 years. Now, though, for millions of Americans, it seems the jury is in. Doing without a king is a bust. We want the king back.
