Letter: Drowning out all opposition is not a path to liberty

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A note next to a shelf of books at Ken Sanders' book shop at the Leonardo in Salt Lake City.

Moms for Liberty might be an apt name if their goal was for parents having more control over what their children have access to. For example, instead of banning all books they don’t find appropriate, maybe requesting a parental approval section in school libraries.

A coworker wisely said, “it’s hard to get people excited about moderation.” He/she who yells the loudest gets their way is not liberty. I don’t care which political, religious or philosophical position it comes from (even if I agree with them). Those who only talk to/listen to/read from those who see things the same way they do, don’t have the right to speak for everyone.

I’ve seen many issues where things are off target by a mile. But instead of asking that things be moved back a mile, the loudest or most powerful group demands things move two miles. As a result, things are just as off target as they were before — just in a different direction. As a result, in a few years the pendulum swings just as far in the opposite direction with each swing knocking out more of the middle.
