Letter: The only way for American democracy to survive is a widespread embrace of compromise

(Manuel Balce Ceneta | AP) President Joe Biden reacts as the National Governors Association Vice Chair Utah Gov. Spencer Cox speaks during a dinner reception for governors and their spouses in the State Dining Room of the White House, Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, in Washington.

After hearing President Joe Biden’s recent address and reading various messages from Gov. Spencer Cox, I have come to one conclusion: The only way for a democracy to survive is for the majority of the people to be able to compromise their positions against that of the “other” side. Both Biden and Cox have made strides towards compromise.

Those in our country who would constantly “block out” the views of others in favor of their own could ultimately doom the American democracy experience.

These slanted views are the result of social media slants and cable news profiteering.

The only way for democracy to survive here is for a majority of Americans to reach out to a variety of news feeds and use their rational judgment in making voting choices.

God Bless America. God Bless the rational thinkers in us.

Michael Coe, St. George
