Josh Carr’s recent letter regarding conservative climate policies hits the spot. What is needed in Congress is less fear and panic, and more focus on what can work. Fortunately, his suggested carbon dividend policy has already been put before Congress as the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Unfortunately, it only received support from Democrats in the last session.
The concept of carbon dividends was originally proposed by three of President Ronald Reagan’s Cabinet, namely George Shultz, James Baker and Henry Paulson, and has been advocated by the conservative Climate Leadership Council as well as by 3600 U.S. economists of all stripes.
So why not solve two problems at once? Get this climate policy into law, and make it bipartisan. Climate change affects us all, which is why agreement of a policy by both parties is best for all.
