Letter: Reducing the number of guns in America has too much powerful opposition. What if we ration ammunition?

OK, so we all know there are too many guns in this country.

Many Americans cling fiercely to their constitutional “right to bear arms” with the belief that owning guns is their right, dammit!, and that guns are needed for personal defense.

None of the gun owners who follow that philosophy have offered suggestions about how to reduce the number of guns at large.

The NRA has become too powerful to enlist their help in reducing the number of guns in the nation’s households.

What about rationing ammo? Once the available supply is used, how about issuing cards to be presented at time of purchase? Obviously lots of hurdles would have to be overcome to make the system work but it could be made to work if enough people want it to.

Would we stand behind stopping the killings?

As Pogo once said, “We have met the enemy and they are us.”
