Letter: Why don’t Utah Republicans want to protect DeSantis from a bad guy with a gun?

An April 4 Tribune front page headline reads, “No guns at Utah GOP convention because of DeSantis’ appearance.”

Huh? Oh, Utah GOP Chairman Carson Jorgensen says he finds it prudent to “err on the side of caution.”

But Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a bill into law allowing concealed carry without a permit in Florida, a law very similar to the one Republicans already passed for the state of Utah.

So, what’s the sudden concern about an auditorium full of armed citizens who are just exercising their legal and constitutional right to conceal a deadly weapon on their person while attending their own party’s convention in this state? Or in Florida for that matter.

What’s wrong with these people? They keep telling us that guns make us safer. How will a good guy without his gun stop a bad guy from harming DeSantis or anyone else? Please explain.
