Letter: Unprecedented achievement of the Utes ski team deserves recognition

(Nick Grace | University of Utah) The University of Utah Utes ski team celebrates winning the NCAA Skiing Championships at Soldier Hollow in Heber on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

Skiing is supposed to be a big deal here in Utah. So are sports at the University of Utah, at least that is what I thought. But, if that is the case, why did almost every media outlet in Utah, including The Salt Lake Tribune, fail to mention that the Utes won their fourth consecutive NCAA ski championship at Lake Placid, New York?

No team has ever won four straight. Skiing is one of Utah’s biggest economic engines. Ski racing is a big draw for the winter Olympics, which many Utahns wish to once again hold in our state. Ignoring the sport and the accomplishment is a grave injustice.

I hope The Tribune, TV and radio outlets will give some credit where credit is due to these great men and women Utes.

I want to give the Ute ski team a high five. I hope that our sports media in Utah wakes up. The Ute men and women, alpine and nordic teams were amazing and deserve more.
