Letter: Texas Instruments plant will consume millions of gallons of water per day at Utahns’ expense

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Gov. Spencer Cox and Haviv Ilan of Texas Instruments after announcing an $11 billion investment and new facility in Lehi during a news conference at the Capitol building in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023.

With regards to the new (yet to be constructed) microchip factory, we seem to be shooting ourselves in the foot, or maybe both feet.

The Texas Instruments plant will consume between two and four million gallons of water per day. Water we do not have as we are in a 23-year drought.

The average consumer uses approximately 300 gallons per day, so the plant will use water that 10,000 families could use.

On top of that, the state will give a hefty tax incentive to Texas Instruments. Have we really thought this through?
