Letter: Regardless of prohibitions, women will still need and get abortions

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Karianne Lisonbee, R-Clearfield, arrives to a meeting of the House Judiciary Committee in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023.

Can someone please answer me? Whatever is happening (or has happened) to the sensibilities of our legislative leaders? How can they choose to not even think through to what the true and legitimate end results will be of the decisions they make? Or do they know the truth, and choose not to think about it?

It doesn’t matter if Rep. Karianne Lisonbee gets her proposed bill passed by the Legislature that will close abortion clinics, it doesn’t matter what other laws are passed opposing abortions in Utah, women will still need and get abortions! And if a woman doesn’t qualify for an abortion under the exemptions allowed, if she needs an abortion, she will still get an abortion.

And here’s the rub. If the providers of abortions are to be held accountable if they mistakenly make the wrong decision on an abortion, and they just close up and quit, or if abortions clinics, such as Planned Parenthood, are forced to close, it doesn’t matter. Women will still need to have abortions.

If a woman can’t afford to go out of state to an official abortion clinic, what will she do? She will either try to perform an abortion on herself, or she will be forced to find the underground/backdoor provider of illegal abortions.

Do you, the Legislature, actually believe that by making abortions illegal in Utah, that women will stop having abortions? What so-claimed moral proclivities do you swear by that allow you to blind yourselves to the realities of the end results of the decisions you make? Or do you just choose not to think about it?
