Letter: How about training drivers to obey traffic rules and be observant of pedestrians?

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) A pedestrian crosses West Temple near 255 South while holding a crosswalk flag on Friday, February 3, 2023.

I read the article about the orange flags for pedestrians today right after I was nearly hit crossing Main St. at 2100 South. I had the light and was in the crosswalk when a driver made a left turn heading directly for me. He swerved at the last minute.

As a pedestrian I’ve had a lot of close calls, including a driver on State Street who ran the light going so fast he couldn’t have stopped if he wanted to. Again, I had the crosswalk and light.

One final case. I was walking across 2100 South. I had the crosswalk and the light. A woman who wanted to turn left started screaming at me because she thought I wasn’t walking fast enough.

There are many others and they all involve a driver breaking the law and failing to pay attention to pedestrians.

How about training drivers to obey traffic rules and be observant of pedestrians? Stricter enforcement of driving rules and more tickets are what we need.

I have as much right on the road as a car.
