The late Episcopal theologian Marcus Borg wrote extensively about what he called “the dream of God.” He described this dream as a political and social order rooted in compassion and justice.
God, according to Borg, calls us to embrace systems free of exploitation and oppression. This domination-free order would alleviate human suffering rather than promote individualistic gain, essentially shattering our current political order. Despite calls for justice by many prophetic figures, humanity has consistently fallen short of this dream. In our society, those who beg us to make the dream of God a reality are often dismissed as “woke.”
Since the beginning of this legislative session, many of us have watched in dismay. The Utah Way is not the dream of God.
Rather than extending compassion to the transgender community, we see cruelty to score political points in the name of “protecting children.” We watch as the wealthy are given vouchers for private education under the guise of “school choice” even though voters have rejected vouchers repeatedly. Tax cuts weaken the social safety net for those in need.
The cycle repeats every year.
The wealthy and privileged maintain their power and influence. The voices of the marginalized are ignored in favor of the voices of lobbyists and conservative think tanks. The supermajority has rejected the dream of God, a social and political order rooted in justice for all.
