Letter: If the Utah Legislature actually supported families, the food tax would go

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Representatives Judy Weeks Rohner, R-West Valley City and Rosemary Lesser, D-Ogden are shown on the steps of the Utah Capitol on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, to bring attention to legislation they are bringing forward aimed at eliminating the state’s portion of the sales tax on food.

As the Legislature begins the 2023 session with a budget surplus, of course their immediate response is the potential of tax cuts.

I wonder if these legislators ever do their own grocery shopping.

I’m retired and the price of groceries is a burden. I can’t even imagine what it is like for a family with children, where both parents have jobs in order to pay for rent and utilities, and then their food is taxed.

For a state that touts families first it would be nice to have a Legislature that actually supports families and removes the food tax.
