Letter: Buses, like UTA’s 209, don’t have to be packed all times to be essential

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A UTA bus drives South on State Street, in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022.

I’m puzzled by Drew Hardesty’s statement that no one rides the UTA 209 bus. When, exactly, has he ridden that line?

Not all businesses are busy 24-7. If I walk into a grocery store, there are times when it is busier than others. If I go into WalMart at 3 a.m., it will be almost empty, even if the cashier lines at 3 p.m. stretch out indefinitely.

I don’t think Hardesty really understands how buses work and that they don’t have to be packed at all times every day.

Buses are a huge benefit to the community. For some people, buses are the only way to access work, doctors and grocery stores.

We also need them to help control pollution. They don’t need to be constantly busy to accomplish that.
