Letter: Alfalfa fields could be repurposed for additional uses besides generation of solar energy

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Alfalfa fields in Mt. Carmel on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022.

In response to David Folland’s recent Public Forum letter, “Field of Solar Panels,” I’d like to add to the repurposing of alfalfa fields, besides single use solar farms for energy.

I’ve been suggesting to use the land for multiple uses. If the solar farm panels were set higher, it would allow for other uses to occupy the same land.

Such things as greenhouses, different agricultural products, even grassland for grazing. The shade would lower the land temperature, thus less evaporation and water savings. This allows several sources of income for landowners to pull from and may be more lucrative than alfalfa farming. The big cost will be running the transmission lines. There are many options for those that can be looked into.

Something to be promoted. Efficient use of land to benefit all.
