I am thankful to Sen. Mitt Romney and our U.S. House delegation for having the courage to vote in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies federal marriage protections for same-sex and interracial couples into law.
The Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed protections for same-sex marriages, has been called into question in recent months. That makes this legislation more critical than ever for the more than one million same-sex married couples in addition to the millions of interracial married couples that currently enjoy federally recognized marriages.
Many times we are quick to criticize our elected officials for what they fail to do, but we do not recognize the good they accomplish. As the House prepares to take a final vote on this legislation before sending it to President Joe Biden’s desk, we should take the time to thank Sen. Romney and our House representatives for doing what is right and supporting the Respect for Marriage Act.
Rep. Andrew Stoddard, D-Sandy
