Letter: Sounds of freedom: Fighter plane noises around Ogden should be humbling

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration and 388th Fighter Wing, based at Hill Air Force Base, performs a formation flyover as seen over Intermountain Health Center in Murray on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

New to Ogden or the surrounding areas of Hill Air Force Base? Jet noises new to your senses? Or, are you just a lifelong resident that has always demeaned the jet noises?

The F-4s landed at Hill AFB after the end of the Vietnam War. I was one of those active duty personnel that followed the 388th TFW to Utah. F-4s were replaced by F-16s and now F-16s replaced by F-35s. Regardless of your take on the noises of jet fighter planes cruising the skies around your home, be it known that those noises that may be a nuisance to you are the “sounds of freedom.”

Your freedom being preserved by personnel from all over the USA, training and living wherever and whenever they are needed.

The noises may annoy you at times, but be aware that someone else is serving and sacrificing on your behalf so you don’t have to. You should be humbled by the presence of the noises and all those that serve to keep that noise ringing in your ears as the “sound of freedom.”
