Letter: The people of Salt Lake County have been well-served by Sim Gill. He deserves another 4 years.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill watches a video of the fatal 2018 police shooting of Delorean Pikyavit during a news conference in Salt Lake City on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022.

Twelve years ago, I ran against Sim Gill to be the Democratic nominee for Salt Lake County District Attorney. Four years later, I endorsed and supported his Republican opponent. Four years after that I again endorsed and supported his Republican opponent. This year, I endorse Gill.

I’ve practiced criminal law for 40 years. Among the best things to have happened in our criminal justice system in that time has been the introduction of specialty courts. Drug court, mental health court, veterans court, and more. They have proved to be the most effective and inexpensive ways of dealing with crime and recidivism. And Gill has been the single most innovative person in the criminal justice system working with these courts. In 1995, I helped bring the drug court concept to Utah and without Gill’s support, we could not have obtained the successes we have seen.

The district attorney’s office is charged with the difficult job of investigating police officer’s use of force. Those decisions are often difficult and almost always result in angering someone. I have personally represented dozens of officers who have had to use deadly force in connection with their job. I have always found Gill and his office to be careful, conscientious, and fair with these no-win decisions, even when they went against my clients. Gill has demonstrated unparalleled decisiveness and courage in these matters.

The people of Salt Lake County have been well-served by Sim Gill. He deserves another 4 years.
