Letter: Motorcycles should be required to create no more pollution than a passenger car

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A motorcyclist travels along 700 East in Salt Lake City on Monday, May 13, 2019.

When a motorcycle passes me on my bicycle I choke on exhaust fumes. It’s much worse when a gang of motorcycles pass.

The average motorcycle emits 10 times the pollution of a typical passenger car (Los Angeles Times, Sept. 16, 2021). On a per-pound basis a motorcycle emits 50 times the pollution of a passenger car. In light of our air pollution situation, it is well past time to require street legal motorcycles registered along the Wasatch Front create no more pollution than a passenger car.

FYI, biker dudes, a loud bike doesn’t make you cool, it makes you a self-absorbed jerk. Is this who you want to be?
