Letter: Utah could have a senator who makes decisions for the people, not a political party

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Evan McMullin addresses a crowd of in Salt Lake City, Sept. 7, 2022.

People ask how a senator from one of the poorest, smallest, and least educated states in the nation has been able to control Congress’s agenda since 2020.

It’s simple, really. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., represents the interests of his constituents and makes decisions on policy not on party. He isn’t popular with either party, particularly not his own, but he doesn’t need to be. The people of West Virginia elect him.

If we elect Utah’s independent candidate Evan McMullin to the U.S. Senate in 2022, Utah will have a senator with considerable sway over Congress’ agenda. Utah would have a senator who votes in the interest of the people and is not beholden to either party. Think about that when you cast your ballot in November. We could have a senator who makes decisions for the people of Utah, not a political party.
