Letter: Is the media afraid to confront the candidates and their campaigns?

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A voter drops his ballot in the drop box at Murray City Hall, on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021.

Utah media outlets, including the two major newspapers and four major television news channels, are letting voters in Utah down. Reading The Tribune everyday and watching local news, how do we have a good baseline to vote from?

As voters we look to an unbiased look at both voting records and baseline stances on major issues. I rarely see or hear any specific information from the media. We are instead left to make our decisions from say-nothing ads paid for by PACs and say-nothing yard signs.

Is the media afraid to confront the candidates and their campaigns?

I would propose that the consortium of media meet to put together a specific list of, say, 25 to 50 specific questions for the candidates to answer. If the six major media outlets stood together we could have a more clear picture of who to vote for.

If any candidate refuses or neglects to answer them we know they do not have our best interest at heart. They should not get our vote. It is time for the candidates to speak to the public and be totally transparent. Help us elect representation that will truly represent us.
