Letter: How well has clerical secrecy worked in cases of sexual abuse?

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints office building on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.

In a recent op-ed in The Tribune, Stuart C. Reid speaks out in defense of clerical secrecy when congregants tell of sexual abuse.

Stuart Reid: How well has your preferred system worked for Catholic victims over many centuries? How well has it worked for the Southern Baptists? And how well has it worked for Mormons?

The obvious answer is that it hasn’t worked at all. Otherwise, why are there ongoing lawsuits among the few victims courageous enough to come forward?

Many other victims have been shamed into silence.

How much of Mormon tithing is being used to pay their lawyers to fight their own abused members?

As long as there are male dominated religions, as most are, the abuse will continue — as well as the cover ups.
