Letter: A clueless pawn of the patriarchy who has no business representing Utah women

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Karianne Lisonbee, answers questions about Utah's trigger law, SB174, during a news conference at the State Capitol, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, on Friday, June 24, 2022.

Rep. Karianne Lisonbee,

As Madeleine Albright (a woman with a backbone) said, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.” Because of you, Utah women have been relegated to second class citizens — and Utah a worse place for women than Mississippi and much of the developing world. Because of you, Utah women have fewer rights and less access to health care than their mothers and grandmothers did. Because of you, Utah women will die.

Perhaps some day you’ll have a granddaughter that makes a life-changing mistake but no longer has autonomy over her own body to choose her own path. Perhaps you’ll have a hard time looking her in the eye after she is forced to bring a child into this world, forever cementing her place in this world as second to men. Perhaps then you’ll realize what an abysmal representative of women you’ve been.

But you’ll probably just keep on deluding yourself, making ridiculous comments to defend yourself, all the while putting members of your own gender (and family) in chains. Do you really think that the men of the Utah Legislature respect you for standing up there with them defending restrictions on Utah women?

You’re a clueless pawn of the patriarchy who has no business representing Utah women.

Ashley Peck, Salt Lake City
