Letter: There is overwhelming opposition to the Parleys gravel pit. Let the message be heard.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A proposed limestone quarry in Parleys Canyon would be accessed by this road above Interstate 80, photographed Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021.

Over 25,000 citizens have signed a petition opposing a gravel pit in Parleys Canyon. The Central Wasatch Committee has voiced opposition to a gravel pit in Parleys Canyon. The Mountainous Planning Commission opposes a gravel pit in Parleys Canyon.

Salt Lake County voted against any mining in the Wasatch Mountains. The Association of Community Councils together opposes the gravel pit. Fourteen Community Councils oppose the Parleys gravel pit.

Salt Lake City, Millcreek and Mt. Air residents, whose springs and aquifers would be affected, oppose the Parleys gravel pit. Health care, business groups and recreation groups all oppose the Parleys gravel pit.

The message could not be clearer. There is overwhelming opposition and still Holladay developer Jesse Lassley, Tree Farm LLC, tries to find a workaround to mine Grandeur Peak in Parleys Canyon.

Every canyon in the Wasatch is under pressure with bad proposals (gravel pit, gondola, road widening). Maybe we should step forward and give citizens the opportunity to be heard and let local leaders make the decision. The Wasatch Mountains are ourNo. 1 economic asset. Let’s not destroy them.
