Letter: Are the faithful wicked for supporting Trump’s evil actions?

(Doug Mills | The New York Times) A tweet by then-President Donald Trump is displayed on a screen during the first public hearing before the House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack in Washington on Thursday night, June 9, 2022.

Every single one of us all along knew in our hearts and minds that Trump made up and promoted the lies about the election fraud (ironically, all in Republican controlled states). On top of that the Jan. 6 commission has shown Trump’s own people knew it was a fraud and told Trump repeatedly. Just this week Trump at the Faith and Freedom conference (oxymoron) still called Mike Pence a coward for not overthrowing America (coup).

Are the faithful wicked for supporting these evil actions? If I asked you a few years ago if you would support the lies by an evil demagogue to be enablers to overthrow of American democracy, throwing away the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights because your candidate did not win (nothing could be more unpatriotic), you would have stated, “Not a chance in hell.”

The prophet described many of you and the overwhelming majority of Mormons to a T. President Monson: “The moral compass of society is changing, behaviors once considered evil are now widely accepted.” You and the prophet have answered for yourselves, it is wicked – just as any other sin such as adultery, pride and dishonesty, it can and is not justifiable.

The Latter-day Saints will have another test with the primary election. They can once again be wicked and vote for Mike Lee, who is promoting the lies and man that led to the overthrow of the Constitution and democracy. Or they can show they are not wicked by saying enough is enough and supporting candidates with their supposed values, such as Becky Edwards or others.

I fear for their honor, as Liz Cheney stated, and the future of our democracy if they will once again fail future generations and fail the test.

If they fail, the question will be answered by themselves once again: We are wicked.

Ken Olsen, Sandy
