Letter: On June 28, vote to unseat Utah’s constitutional fraudster – Mike Lee

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sen. Mike Lee at the Republican Senate primary debate in Draper on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Utahns have continually been told that Sen. Mike Lee is a “constitutional scholar.” If the January 6 insurrection hearings have done nothing else, they have introduced us to a real constitutional scholar, judge Michael Luttig. With great precision, he started from the words of the Constitution and showed that neither those words nor subsequent legislation nor historical precedent provided any basis for then Vice President Mike Pence, on Jan. 6, 2021, essentially to choose who would be the president. Had Pence tried to interfere in the process, Luttig said it would have plunged the country “into what would have been tantamount to a revolution within a paralyzing constitutional crisis.”

Contrast that with Utah’s constitutional fraudster who had been spending “fourteen hours a day” to find state legislators who would undertake an illegal and unconstitutional effort to overthrow the 2020 election results. And, we now know that he was doing this at the behest of Donald Trump and Mark Meadows, both of whom had been told this effort was “nutty,” “certifiably crazy,” illegal, and, yes, unconstitutional.

We have less than two weeks to voice our opinion on Mike Lee’s constitutional acumen and his actions abetting an attack on the rule of law and our democratic system. I doubt that his opponents consider themselves constitutional experts, but I am fully confident that they have a better understanding of the Constitution than the current senator. Furthermore, they would be unlikely to support new efforts to overturn free and fair elections nor our legally grounded right to choose our leaders.

This is an opportunity for us Utahns to be true constitutional conservatives! I urge us all to seize this moment and to vote on June 28 to unseat Mike Lee!
