Letter: Immigrants merit the same chance in this land as previous immigrants have had

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A rally outside of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office at 2975 S. Decker Lake Drive in West Valley City, on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019.

As a Hispanic youth, I often feel negative reactions toward Hispanic immigrants in this country.

Yet, to send us all back to our country, as we often hear, would be impossible and ill-advised.

There are millions of Hispanic immigrants here now, and without us there would be few people willing

to harvest fresh fruits and vegetables in America. We do much of the heavy lifting that few others are willing to do.

There would be a serious lack of landscaping, house-keeping and construction work if we did not eagerly fill those jobs.

Immigrants work long, hard hours for less pay than many other working groups.

We are hard-working contributors who merit the same chance in this land as previous immigrants have had.

I am so proud of my people and I will be forever proud of being who I am.

I am especially proud of my parents who came with nothing, yet gave me everything.

Jennifer Hernandez, Kaysville
