Letter: Anti-mask mandate ruling is contrary to constitutional imperative to “promote the general Welfare”

(Ted S. Warren | AP) Travelers walk through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday, April 1, 2022 in Seattle. On Monday, April 18, 2022, a federal judge in Florida voided the national mask mandate covering airplanes and other public transportation saying it exceeded the authority of U.S. health officials.

It is beyond appalling that a federal judge in Florida declared that the mask mandate issued by the CDC, a branch of the federal government, was unlawful.

First of all, our Declaration of Independence speaks of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. One must have life before there can be liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That’s probably why these three terms are in the order which they are written.

Secondly, one of the main pillars of our Constitution found in its preamble is the mandate “promote the general Welfare.” The CDC, the Center for Disease Control, is tasked with doing its best to keep the citizens of our country healthy and alive when faced with fighting a disease like the corona virus which has caused the death of nearly 1 million of our citizens.

To deem unlawful the constitutional requirement to “promote the general Welfare” is clearly contrary to what helps define the United States of America.
