Federal judge David Carter concluded that Donald Trump — when he was president — and attorney John Eastman “launched a campaign to overturn a democratic election, an action unprecedented in American history.”
The bottom line is that our former president tried to take our representative democracy from us. If we don’t find out what went on during that inglorious day, Jan. 6, 2021, will repeat itself.
While Carter concluded that it is “more likely than not that criminal activity occurred,” the Jan. 6 Committee does not have the power to bring criminal charges.
As we look at whether the Justice Department will bring criminal charges, we need to realize that they do not comment on an ongoing investigation. Additionally, there have been no leaks from that skillful and proficient group of lawyers! More than 800 persons have been charged with crimes associated with their Jan. 6 activities. They must cast a wide net to get the big fish. They must be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt if they decide to bring charges. As poet John Dryden wrote, “beware the fury of a patient man.”
In a redux of the events of his first impeachment, Trump has asked Putin himself to provide dirt on the Biden family. Once again, he is showing his unwillingness to even think that he shouldn’t put his own priorities above America’s interests. Why else would he call Putin a genius, when the man’s actions in Ukraine have shown him to be a war criminal.
It’s the same old story with Trump. There was never a time when he was in office that he was presidential. He was never able to change his expression or his attitude. He is like a fading star, collapsing upon itself into a black hole, drawing everyone around him into it.
