Letter: It’s striking to consider mean vs. median wealth in America and other wealthy nations

Andy Larsen and I share a fondness for statistics from reliable sources. Valid stats add truth to dispel fact-less beliefs. For example, the U.S. has a median (50% more and 50% less) wealth of $79,000 per adult (No. 26 in the world) vs. a mean (average) wealth of $505,000 per adult (No. 2 in the world after Switzerland). This ratio of 6.4 to 1 is the highest of almost all wealthy nations and illustrates the extreme wealth concentration of the rich in America.

Another way of looking at the data is that every family with two adults in America would be millionaires if the nation’s wealth were evenly distributed. Although I don’t suggest total wealth equality, the data suggest that other wealthy nations are able to share their wealth more equally among their citizens.
