Letter: Why was there no outrage over people chanting “Let’s go Brandon” at a BYU home game?

(Trevor Christensen | Special to The Tribune) Brigham Young University's Tyler Allgeier performs a somersault into the end zone against Virginia during the second half at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, in Provo.

Several unruly fans attending the USC game in California mistakenly thought it would be ok to chant “F$*& the Mormons. The outrage was immediate, and USC did the right thing and condemned the chant. BYU fans were offended and took to social media to vilify USC.

I am trying to understand what the difference is between that chant and the flag waving crowd at a home game chanting, “Let’s go Brandon.” There is none. Yet there is no outrage. In fact, social media has glorified it, found it amusing and posted pictures of a student waving the flag. There was no mention of anyone trying to stop the chant, no mention of any outrage.

We do not get to hypocritically choose our offense. Chanting at the BYU game was the same offensive language as the USC fans. It was just cloaked in what people think is clever.

Please explain that to my eight-year-old grandson.

Regardless which side of the aisle your political views land, either chant is the same and both are disgusting, thought up from minds who have no intention of finding common ground.

Stop this madness.
