The passing of Glen Tuckett, the former BYU and Alabama athletic director, brought to mind his disdain for players who didn’t “hustle” during practice, a disdain that came vividly to mind when reading of his accomplishments.
After a stint as a dapper second baseman for the Salt Lake Bees of the early-day Pioneer League, Tuckett became baseball coach at West High.
During a practice session at Jordan Park, the coach obviously didn’t care for my apparent lack of enthusiasm and bellowed out his admonishment that has stayed with me for decades:
“Move around out there in left field, Korologos, or a dog is going to think you’re a tree.”
I hustled from then on. Big time!
