Letter: Stay away from the public purse when attempting grandiose golf course schemes or far-fetched pipelines

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) The site of a proposed Kane County golf course near Kanab, on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021.

I just knew as soon as the federal government offered funds to ranchers, and other self-reliant types in southern Utah, for drought relief that they would be back begging for more hand-outs.

A golf course in Kanab using federal funds?

If it were such a great idea, why hasn’t the private market solution appeared as it did with the hydroxychloroquine orders or the Healthy Together COVID tracking app (oh, wait, never mind). These examples of private-public sector partnership for the greater good were boondoggles that highlight the Utah way; socialize cost and privatize profit.

Stay away from the public purse when attempting grandiose golf course schemes or far-fetched pipelines. Determining who gets to dip into the public trough for whichever pet project appears to be as clear as dirty sodas here in Zion. Whether it’s food stamps, Medicare payments, or even a poorly conceived golf course project it all comes from the same till. You can call it welfare or economic development but that’s just using different names for the same thing. We have to end the scourge of this welfare-esque dependency in southern Utah. Grab your bootstraps boys, it’s time to pull yourselves up!
