Letter: Let’s not spend money just so 1 percenters can get to their favorite ski resort faster

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Little Cottonwood Canyon, on Friday, June 25, 2021.

Let me disclose, I am 70, retired, happily married, with no mortgage on our lovely East bench home and sufficient retirement savings to supplement my Social Security. We could ski but choose not to because our thrifty hearts can no longer justify the expense.

When faced with the choices of spending hundreds of million dollars on Little Cottonwood Canyon to speed the 1 percenters to their favorite ski resort, I say neither.

Climate change is real. Our ski seasons are only somewhat normal due to using our precious and ever limited water supply to make artificial snow.

When have we ever proposed spending half a billion dollars on recreation for Rose Park, West Valley City, Magna or Kearns? Isn’t it time to get our priorities straight?
