Letter: A science section in The Tribune would be a great service to the community

(Erin Alberty | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Lakeshore Trail at Fish Lake leads to an overlook with a view of Pando, the largest aspen grove and most massive living thing known on Earth. In fall the leaves are gorgeous, and the trail is largely shaded for a nice respite in summer. Photo taken Oct. 5, 2017.

As a longtime reader of The Salt Lake Tribune, I feel our local newspaper could use a science section among its list of categories. We have sections on politics and religion, culture and sports, but no such attention given to science? I find this odd for a newspaper whose target audience are the more liberal residents of Utah.

Utah is home to some excellent universities, and although The Salt Lake Tribune regularly reports on breakthroughs and research made by our scientists, it’s a shame that science isn’t given the same respect and attention as sports and religion. As a resident of Utah, I’m interested in many local developments relating to science. The drought, the current levels of the Great Salt Lake and reservoirs, the condition of Pando, wolverine sightings, and much more. Having a place in The Salt Lake Tribune where stories on scientific topics are compiled and organized would be a great service to their readership and community.
