Letter: We need to make water conservation a way of life

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A walking pier sits idle at Hite Marina hundreds of yards from the edge of the Colorado River as it flows into Lake Powell on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021.

Pee while you shower. Save a flush.

Years ago, The Salt Lake Tribune ran a story about Brazil’s water conservation policy. The above was one of the suggestions. Yep. They ran TV ads and everything.

More tips (not necessarily from Brazil):

Keep hand sanitizer by all bathroom and kitchen sinks.

We seldom need to run our bathroom and kitchen faucets at full blast. Never run faucet water needlessly.

While in the shower, turn on the water to get wet, turn off the water, soap up, turn on the water to rinse off.

Let it be O.K. to look at mostly yellow-green dry grass this summer. No need for lush green lawns in a drought.

It would be helpful if businesses placed hand sanitizer dispensers in all public restrooms. Also, the restrooms in all government buildings.

Parents can turn water saving tips into a family game. Reward children for their ideas. Reward them again when they follow through.

We need to make water conservation a way of life and not just during drought years.
