Letter: Don’t forget GOP’s fealty to the man who almost destroyed our democracy

The latest excuse given by GOP leadership and rank and file members for ousting Liz Cheney from her leadership position in the House is that she was a “distraction.” A distraction from what? Spending 100% of their time obstructing everything the Biden administration attempts to do, including preventing votes on HR 1 to protect the right to vote, and on a bill to rebuild America’s crumbling bridges, highways, water systems and other essential infrastructure.

Liz Cheney and her opposition to “The Big Lie” were a distraction. Matt Gaetz’s imminent prosecution for pedophilia and child sex trafficking apparently was not. Lauren Boebert’s refusal to abide by House rules to pack her gun onto the floor of the House apparently was not. Majorie Taylor Greene and her ridiculous claim that Jewish space lasers caused the California wildfires last summer apparently was not. One hundred and forty seven House members who voted to overturn the results of “the most secure election in American history” apparently were not.

Bottom line? The only real sin in today’s Republican party is not showing proper fealty to a man who almost single handedly destroyed our democracy by inciting a riot at the US Capitol and endangered the lives of Vice President Pence and members of the House and Senate, and who continues to push the false narrative that he actually won an election he lost by over 7 million votes. We know his “Big Lie” is indeed a lie because he told us well before the election that the only way he could lose was if there was massive voter fraud — a lie that has been rebuffed by several state courts, several district courts, the Supreme Court of the United States, the Republican led Federal Elections Commission, the FBI, the governors of the disputed states, the secretaries of state of those same states, and thousands of election workers in those states.

American voters expressed their opinion of Trump in a resounding defeat in the 2020 elections. Hopefully they will again express their displeasure at the direction of the GOP in the 2022 midterm elections and in the 2024 presidential election.
