Of all the issues presented to like or dislike Donald Trump, the one that causes me the most pain is the division he has caused in my family. We have both Republicans and Democrats represented, but always had a modicum of respect for the other’s point of view. We could discuss politics, not expecting to change minds but in the interest of learning how the other might think about a subject.
Generally, I believe everyone is allowed to believe what they want. When Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was asked about his friendship with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, he said he attacked the idea not the person. Lately the whole political scene seems to have devolved into name-calling, labeling, dismissing, and defining a narrative of unacceptance of the other’s point of view without clarification. It seems to be ok to attack another without even taking time to listen to the other person. Dismissing even before engaging.
If people talk, they might find more in common than they initially thought.
I miss the closeness with my family I once had. We are so much more than our political party.
