Letter: Choosing Nelson was a slap in the face to many UVU students

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Graduates listen in their cars, as commencement speaker, Wendy Watson Nelson speaks, at Utah Valley University's graduation program in Orem, on Friday, May 7, 2021.

I don’t understand how Wendy Nelson could have been chosen as the commencement speaker at UVU this year. Her history of anti-LGBT writings must have made UVU LGBT students feel unwanted at their own graduation.

I say this as a father who had a gay son commit suicide while attending BYU and I currently have a daughter attending UVU. This choice was a slap in the face to many UVU students.
