Letter: LDS Church seeks after expediency at the expense of great art

(Image courtesy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) An artistic rendering of the renovated garden room in the Salt Lake Temple, December 2019. The church says the mural had to be removed as part of the temple renovation.

Sadly, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems unable to cleave to its own foundational principle propounded in the Thirteenth Article of Faith: “If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.”

The church’s decision to remove historic wall murals from the Salt Lake and Manti temples, including Minerva Teichert’s world room masterpiece, unfortunately seeks after expediency at the expense of something truly inspirational — great art. Apparently in this specific case, “If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek (to remove) these things.”
