Letter: A healthy, harmonious society needs laws and regulations; a mask mandate is one of them

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Dr. Angela Dunn at a news conference in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021.

Is our Legislature now aspiring to be like Alabama, Mississippi and Texas on how to deal with a pandemic? Gov. Cox declares that “nobody wants the government telling them what to do”? Really?

The United States used to be a country to emulate in terms of establishing laws, rules and regulations for the benefit of all its people. A healthy, diverse population can live harmoniously together if we have a set of standards and a rule of law that serve to promote the well-being and happiness of all its citizens. Laws, regulations and rules are necessary in order to have: a healthy education system for all; a healthy financial system; a healthy health care system; a healthy infrastructure system; and a healthy judicial system.

During times of wars and pandemics, it is particularly important to have a healthy government that has the ability to bring the country together to establish best practices to deal with the threats.

Please do not count me in the category of “nobody wants the government telling me what to do.” I have felt so much safer now that Utah has a mask mandate. I have so appreciated that some of our political leaders have taken the advice of the CDC, Dr. Fauci, and Dr. Angela Dunn to mandate the minor inconvenience of wearing a mask for the benefit of all Utah residents.

When did so many of the people in this country arrest at the adolescent stage of “you can’t tell me what to do.” It is time for us all to grow into adulthood.
