I was deeply saddened when I read Robert Kirby’s retirement announcement today, and I mean deeply.
I’ve read every one of his columns. Whether hilarious (most), profound (many), or poignant (just enough) I read on and on. He is one of those rare writers, in my humble opinion, who can draw tears from me with both his humor and his pathos.
My most looked forward to parts of the Tribune: Public Forum, comics, various columnists (primarily Leonard Pitts) and Kirby, are now diminished by one. How to go on? I’ll manage, but the trip will not be as fun.
I wish the best and a future of leisure for Mr. Kirby. I hope to encounter you again.
