Politics in the U.S. is like sports. 24 hour biased coverage on TV by many “experts” who have never played the game. Voters (fans) faithfully support the same team (party) — even when they fail. Star players (Trump) can do no wrong — no matter how badly they are performing, or whether they bend the rules. Fouls that stop the other team scoring are now the norm and are applauded (e.g. the doomed Senate “trial.”
At the international level it’s always “USA! USA! We’re #1!” — when we realistically don’t even make the top 20 in democracy, education, healthcare and fair play (law and order). But we do have the richest owners — 660 billionaires whose wealth is reported to have grown 38.6% to $4.1trillion since the Trump tax cuts and the start of the pandemic.
Top sports teams rarely win repeat championships because their best players get old and lose their edge (29 U.S. senators are over 70, seven over 80). Losing coaches — e.g. McConnell (79), Pelosi (80) — hang on because they enjoy the attention. Smart owners (we the people) say to failed managers — e.g. Trump — “you’ve made your fortune, thanks for your service, here’s a golden parachute, don’t let the door hit you on your way out.” Then they purge the nonperforming players (Congress).
It’s nice to dream.
