Letter: No entity is more socialist than the United States Military

I’ve finally had enough. After hearing Rep. Chris Stewart continually mislabel Democrats as socialists and denounce them as a threat to America, I have to respond.

Rep. Stewart, as a veteran, I can state unequivocally that no entity is more socialist, at least according to your apparent definition of socialism, than the United States Military. As an Air Force officer, you know that the military intentionally forms a community that pays for its members’ education, health care and housing.

Military veterans have access to some of the best government health care in the nation, including substance abuse and mental health treatment, as well as access to lower-interest home loans and post-service education.

Do they deserve it? Yes, but let’s not pretend it is anything other than the government taking care of the basic needs of at least a select few of its citizens.

So please, stop the rhetoric, stop the lies and just do your job of representing all Utahns, including the liberals who didn’t vote for you despite your clear acceptance of the military brand of socialism.

Ronald Hill, Holladay
